- Why Do You Need a Medical for an Australian Visa?
The Australian government requires medical assessments as part of the visa application process to ensure applicants:Do not have any medical conditions that could pose a significant risk to public health or safety in Australia.
- Are not likely to require significant medical treatment or care, which could become a financial burden to Australia’s health system.
- Meet the health standards for living and working in Australia.
The medical examination also helps assess whether you have any contagious diseases, such as tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, HIV, or a condition that might prevent you from working or living in Australia.
- How to Check Your Health Examination Requirements?
Depending on the type of application, you can check through the following process:
- For Online Applications: Log in to ImmiAccount, access your application, and click ‘View health assessment’ to find the ‘Organise health examinations’ link. Complete your medical history to receive a referral letter containing your HAP ID.
- For Paper Applications: Your visa processing officer will contact you if examinations are needed and provide a referral letter with your HAP ID.
You will need your HAP ID to book an appointment, so it is important you have it.
Please note, if you recently had Health Examinations in the last 12 months, you may not need to repeat all tests. Your referral letter will specify required examinations.
The Medical Examination Process
The medical examination for an Australian visa generally includes the following steps:
Book an Appointment:

What to bring for your appointment:
- Your Passport.
- Bring the Referral Letter which has HAP# (this is required before you do the medical)
- Please bring prescription glasses, if you are using.
- Bring all the prescription medication on the day of examination.
- Bring the consultation reports of your past surgeries or completed treatment if you have any.
- No need to be fasting. You can have your regular meal during your exam day.
- For immigration medical exam you need not to bring any photograph, we will take it here for you.
- IME physical takes two to three hours for the whole procedure, kindly prepare yourself and be patient, we will appreciate your cooperation.
- Applicants are required to pay the following fees for the medical exam. Payment for the exam is due at the time of your appointment. All parts of the exam are done on site during your visit, no additional travel required. All the payments are in debit or cash only.

During the MEDICAL EXAM:
- Complete the Health Questionnaire: Before your appointment, you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire to provide information about your medical history and lifestyle
- Attend the Medical Examination: The medical examination is non-invasive and a chaperone is available on request. The medical involves the applicant being undressed down to underwear and drape will be provided.
- The office assistant will check your height, weight, vision.
- The panel physician will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, requests any necessary tests (like blood test or chest X-rays), and may request additional consultations depending on your medical history.
- A breast exam is not usually performed unless there’s a history of breast cancer or a presumption of breast cancer based on the medical history.
- An internal exam is not required for the immigration medical exam.
- Chest X-ray: Required for most applicants over the age of 11 to check for tuberculosis.
- Blood Tests: Required for most applicants over the age of 15 These tests help identify infectious diseases and other health issues.
- Additional Tests: In some cases, additional tests may be required depending on your medical history and specific circumstances.
After the examination:
As soon as your medical report is complete, usually in 3-5 days, we will submit it to Department of Home Affair (DHA) in Sydney via the eMedical portal.
If any of your tests are abnormal we will let you know before submitting the eMedical report.
The decision is made exclusively by Department of Home Affair, based on the medical facts collected by the doctor, not on the doctor’s opinion or recommendation. After the report is submitted, the doctor has no further access to the case and is not informed about the outcome of your application. You will receive an answer directly from DHA.
